What's Not Quite Kosher?

Kashrut, commonly called kosher, are a set of dietary laws followed by some observant Jews. The word translates as "fit", "proper", or "pure", and in the case of foods, means fit for consumption.

The word "Kosher" has entered the modern lexicon and is used to describe when everything is deemed acceptable, cool, or "legit", or not. For example, if someone doesn't follow a process or "bends" a rule, you might hear someone say "Oooooh, I don't think that's kosher".

In my case, I happen to be Jewish. I go to temple, I teach religious school, I've even led Shabbat services. And you won't find bacon in any of my dishes. GASP!!! I know, I know, it's the new salt and pepper...it's in everything, wrapped around everything, and so.damn.good. But, for personal reasons, I gave it up. But, that doesn't mean I keep kosher. I mix my meat and dairy, and I love a good shrimp cocktail and some crab claws. So, I'm Not Quite Kosher.

Not kosher also might extend to other parts of my life, meaning I've been a little unconventional and managed to do a few things "out of order". But it's my path, my life, and I've never been happier.

About me: I'm a mom to two - one grown and one nearly grown - humans and four ill-behaved but sweet and lovable dogs. I've tried numerous things as hobbies, but the one that makes me happiest is cooking. I have a knack for finding recipes that I know will be good. Sometimes I use them for inspiration and make my own dish, sometimes I call an audible and change the ingredients or method up a little, and sometimes I follow them precisely. But the act of cooking, making a meal I will savor and enjoy, and I can share with friends and loved ones just makes me happy. Over the last year I've spent more time experimenting with new ingredients and techniques - upping my game essentially - and I enjoy sharing the efforts and results!

I'll share meals, recipes, food blogs, make wine recommendations, favorite restaurants, and gadgets. Along the way, I might be Not Quite Kosher, but hopefully everyone can find something to enjoy!

Pour a glass of wine. Assuming this is dinner. Sip often.
